About Earth Imagery

The imagery displayed here comes from the Landsat 8 satellite, part of the Landsat program, a joint NASA/USGS program that has been observing Earth continuously since 1972.

Landsat 8 captures images of Earth's surface in visible, near-infrared, short wave infrared, and thermal infrared spectrums. It orbits Earth every 99 minutes at an altitude of 705 km (438 miles).

The images are useful for monitoring land use change, tracking natural disasters, observing agricultural patterns, and studying urban growth.
